We are sorry to report that last night the Rottingdean Windmill was vandalised with graffiti. Many thanks to Clive Bonny for sending this report through to us at the Rottingdean Village website:
Last night at 10pm I saw two young men paint spraying a wall adjoining the Rottingdean golf car park on Beacon Hill.
I ran out in pursuit with my camera to chase them off and saw additional damage had been made to the Windmill and to the wall adjacent to the Windmill on at the back of Nevill Road
The men were aged approx 16-24 wearing dark clothes with T shirts, height approx 5’7″ to 5’9″, weight approx 10-11 stone. They were both carrying black rucksacks which contained white and black paint spray cans. One had very dark hair the other lighter hair.
At 10.30 pm a red mini car parked at the top of Nevill Road next to the A259 drove off at high speed with a young man driving.
Coincidentally a few days earlier a trade white van with a written sign on the side saying Graffiti Removal had been parked at the same place.
News from Councillor Lynda Hyde is that the council are looking at the damage and are organising for it to be cleaned:

Many thanks to @GEM on twitter for use of the image
Please pixilate the graffiti parts of the image, don’t let these vandals get the publicity they desire for their tags.
Good idea. Picture now updated.
Very sad! cant believe some one can do this to a history! unbelievable!
Can’t believe the actions of some people, disgusting how they have no respect.
How utterly horrible. what on earth can they possibly get out of this destruction? I am so sad to see the lovely mill in this state and am very pleased that it is too be cleaned off.
