Rottingdean In Bloom – April/May Issue

April 22, 2013 by Rottingdean Leave a Comment

Eureka!! What seemed to be an endless winter, spring and summer are just around the corner, when we can all put on our gardening togs and get out into the warm air. The Rottingdean in Bloom organising committee is already hard at work preparing for the coming season by tending all the planters and garden beds up and down the High Street and Marine Drive.

Riding on the back of our successes last year when Kipling Gardens and Beacon Hill Nature Reserve both won Gold awards in the South & SouthEast in Bloom competitions, the village itself has re-entered the Small Town Category after a lapse of two years. Also, St. Aubyn’s Mead scored highly and is re-entering “It’s Your Neighbourhood”, which collectively should put Rottingdean firmly on the map!

However, when it comes to judgement day we do rely upon the general public and local residents to play their part in keeping the village clean and tidy, by using the various waste receptacles, particularly when it comes to dog fouling along the pavements, on The Green and Beacon Hill; we never quite know when the judges are likely to turn up!!

One or two extra willing helpers will be extremely welcome and if anyone is that way inclined, then please contact me on 302431. On the other issue of financial support, one may well enquire where all the money goes and appended below is a list of some of the more salient items.

a) Bedding plants and perennials for all the garden beds and containers.
b) Spring bulbs for grass verges.
c) Gardening equipment for local schools, as required.
d) Funding for schools’ ecological projects.
e) New and replacement containers around the village.
f) Lower Terraces rejuvenation, each side of the stage.
g) Natural hanging baskets for lampposts and
h) All the applications for the South & SouthEast in Bloom competitions – with many other incidental items.

If therefore, any of the residents would like to support the cause then they are invited to send any donation, however large or small to our Treasurer Dr. Roger Levy at 46 Dean Court Road, Rottingdean. BN2 7DJ telephone 390886 with cheques made payable to “Rottingdean in Bloom”.
