Do you remember Winifred Hoyle, know as “Rottingdean’s” Queen Mum ?
She started the Rottingdean cavalcade around 1950’s, ran the girls club and provided beautiful costumes to rottingdean drama society and groups in and around the village. Her doll collection stood in the grange for many years. She was a well known Rottingdean figure and took an active part in the life of the village.
I have contacted the councils “adopt a bench” programme along with winifreds family and a group of friends regarding placing a bench in her memory.
The bench is to be sited in the village around the bowling green area. If anyone would like to send a donation towards the cost of the bench and plaque please contact me, Anita Gilson on 01273 303057.
If you prefer you can contact Barrie Wood on 308129 or for further information email Barrie Wood on maureen.wood2@ntlworld.com
If you wish to send a cheque made payable to B Wood – 3 Hilgrove Road, Saltdean BN28QG. You will receive an email acknowledgement of your payment.
Many Thanks
I have a copy of The Young Visiters 1949 bought from an Eastbourne bookseller with the bookplate of Winifred Hoyle and wonder if it belonged to your “Queen Mum”.
The bookplate looks like a black/white linocut )W( in a white square surrounded by flowers.
