The Whiteway centre at Rottingdean is always a hive of industry with classes, meetings and activities. Within this community centre there is a hub of art activities – Whiteway Arts. There are several art classes which take place each week.
Four watercolour techniques classes run by the renowned marine and landscape artist Mick Bensley. Students may work on their own projects or one set by Mick who will demonstrate and guide you through your initial drawing, composition and watercolour techniques. He has such a relaxed and easy way of teaching that he makes you feel confident from the start no matter what your level of expertise.
Amanda Davidson runs a Thursday evening 6 – 8pm life drawing class. I love this class as there is always a really good model drawn from a pool of a wide variety of models. You can attend as a beginner with instruction from Amanda or as an advanced with freedom to draw or paint as you wish from the model. Amanda also has a class on Friday afternoon using general techniques of drawing and painting. She will teach how best to interpret what you see with how you feel. Amanda is always very keen on supporting each student to develop their own creative ideas whilst teaching techniques.
Lucy Parker runs a Monday afternoon class 2-4pm . She runs a structured course which is suitable for both beginners and those with experience. She starts with basic drawing skills, working through most media and finishing with oil painting. Demonstrations and guidance are given throughout.
Aladdin’s Cave – The jewel of the centre and a joy to behold, is the newly designed and stocked art shop, run by Amanda. It has everything you could possibly want for your art activities and any one of the artist tutors will help and advise you.
Of course to keep these classes running we need all you budding artists to attend – the more who enrol each term, the more classes can be accommodated, which is exciting as there are always more techniques to try and fellow artists to meet and work with.
